    Observing observatories: web observatories should use linked data

    Web Observatories are a major international scientific collaboration concerned with data sources of a heterogeneous nature, and often quite large. Of course, they are not the first such collaboration; the Web itself was born as a response to a similar scientific endeavor. It is therefore appropriate to look at other col-laborative activities, and try to learn and use the lessons they have learnt.We argue that Web Observatories should build in interoperability using current best practices right from the start. We also argue that Linked Data is a best practice, and can provide the basis for a research environment that will deliver the vision of a large group of cooperating Observatories, sharing data and re-search results to the benefit of all. In addition, we argue that the activity should not start with a major standardization process, but should grow around appro-priate standards as required

    The Resource constrained shortest path problem implemented in a lazy functional language

    The resource constrained shortest path problem is an NP-hard problem for which many ingenious algorithms have been developed. These algorithms are usually implemented in FORTRAN or another imperative programming language. We have implemented some of the simpler algorithms in a lazy functional language. Benefits accrue in the software engineering of the implementations. Our implementations have been applied to a standard benchmark of data files, which is available from the Operational Research Library of Imperial College, London. The performance of the lazy functional implementations, even with the comparatively simple algorithms that we have used, is competitive with a reference FORTRAN implementation

    RKBExplorer.com:A Knowledge Driven Infrastructure for Linked Data Providers

    RKB Explorer is a Semantic Web application that is able to present unified views of a significant number of heterogeneous data sources. We have developed an underlying information infrastructure which is mediated by ontologies and consists of many independent triplestores. Our current dataset totals many tens of millions of triples each publicly available through both SPARQL endpoints and resolvable URIs. To realise this synergy of disparate information sources, we have deployed tools to identify co-referent URIs, and devised an architecture to allow the information to be represented and used. This paper provides a brief overview of the system including the underlying infrastructure, and a number of associated tools for both knowledge acquisition and publishing

    AKTive Food: Semantic Web based knowledge conduits for the Organic Food Industry

    We present a vision and a proposal for using Semantic Web technologies in the organic food industry. This is a very knowledge intensive industry at every step from the producer, to the caterer or restauranteur, through to the consumer. There is a crucial need for a concept of environmental audit which would allow the various stake holders to know the full environmental impact of their economic choices. This is a different and parallel form of knowledge to that of price. Semantic Web technologies can be used effectively for the calculation and transfer of this type of knowledge (together with other forms of multimedia data) which could contribute considerably to the commercial and educational impact of the organic food industry. We outline how this could be achieved as our essential objective is to show how advanced technologies could be used to both reduce ecological impact and increase public awareness

    The Semantic Web is currently best known for adding metadata to web pages to allow computers to 'understand' what they contain. This idea has been applied to people by the Friend of a Friend project which builds up a network of who people know through their descriptions placed on web pages in RDF. It is here proposed to use RDF to describe a person and to have their RDF document follow them around the Internet. The proposed technique, dubbed Semantic Cookies, will be implemented by storing a user's RDF in a cookie on their own computer through the browser. This paper considers the concept of Semantic Cookies and investigates how far existing technology can be pushed to accommodate the idea
